Legatio Batavica ad Magnum Tartariae Chamum Sungteium, modernum Sinae Imperatorem. Historiarum narratione, quae legatis in Provinciis Quantung, Kiangsi, Nanking, Xantung, Peking, & aula Imperatoria...[&c.]. Amsterdam: Apud Jacobum Meursium, 1668. First Latin edition of an account of the first Dutch embassy to China. With much of the historical and cultural information gleaned from Jesuit sources, Nieuhof's book was famous in its day for its beautiful illustrated depictions of the cities and people, as well as the flora and fauna of China. 4to (31x 21cm), printed title-page + [viii] + 184pp. + 172pp. + index. Embellished with a full-page frontispiece portrait, an engraved title-page, 35 double-page plates, and over 100 engravings in text. Lacking the general map, otherwise complete. Frontispiece and printed title-page with hand-coloring. Edge wear to frontispiece, a couple small tears to leaves, a few leaves with slight foxing and/or browning. Overall a very good interior. Rebacked in calf with portion of original spine laid down, corners repaired. In the rebinding process the double-page plates, apparently originally intended to be folding, have been reinserted to resemble leaves of the book. This has caused the inner margins to be pulled tightly to the center (see photos).
